When New England Journal, a one-hour daily talk show started in 1974, he was the original host. Al graduated from being a news co-anchor to News Anchor, and finally News Director, at WPEC-TV12 (ABC) in West Palm Beach, FL.
From April 1980 to January 1994, Al was working as a prime anchor at WTNH-TV8 (ABC) in New Haven, CT before returning to Channel 3. Later, His colleague Janet Peckinpaugh complained about sexual harassment while working with Al at WTNH. As a result, Peckinpaugh was fired from WFSB but sued the WFSB boss. The court made allegations against Al and Peckinpaugh was paid some million dollars.
Later, the two settled their issues out of court. Since Al and WFSB management could not agree on a new contract on February 24, 2012, he left WFSB as an evening anchor.
