Kleeman wanted to include climate change in her novel in a way that portrayed it as more present and bodily. She set the novel in California, inspired by her childhood in the southern portion of the state.
Her short story “Fairy Tale” was published in The Paris Review in 2010 while she was in the first semester of her MFA program. In 2015 Kleeman’s first novel You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine was published.
