Johnny Hunt is an American evangelical Christian pastor and author. He formerly served as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention and was the first Native American to serve in this post. Before that, Hunt served as the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Woodstock based in Woodstock, Georgia.

Currently, Hunt serves as the Senior Vice President of theEvangelism & Leadership division of the North American Mission Board.His major role is to speak nationally to church leaders as well as congregants regarding sharing the Christian Gospel.

Hunt was mentored by several men from his home church in Wilmington, North Carolina following his conversion. After the mentoring, he realized that God had called him to ministry.

He married his wife calledJanet Allen Huntfrom Wilmington, North Carolina. The couple has two daughters namely Deanna Hunt Carswell and Hollie Hunt Hixson. Hunt and Janet are grandparents to their three granddaughters namedKatie Carswell, Hope Hixson,andAddie Hixson.Also, they have a grandson calledCarson Carswell.

He holds two degrees. One from Gardner-Webb College and another one from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Also, Hunt earned honorary doctorates from Tennessee Temple University, Covington Theological Seminary, and Immanuel Baptist Theological Seminary.

From July 1976 to August 1979, Hunt held ministry positions at Lavonia Baptist Church, Mooresboro, North Carolina. He was at Falls Baptist Church in Wake Forest, North Carolina from 1979 to 1980. From May 1981 to December 1, 1986, Hunt worked at Longleaf Baptist Church, Wilmington, North Carolina. He as well served at First Baptist Church,  in Woodstock, Georgia ( one of the largest churches in the United States)  from 1986 to December 2019. First Baptist Woodstock grew from about 1,000 to more than 19,000 members under his ministry.

Hunt was named the President of the SBC Pastor’s Conference in June 1996. He established the Johnny Hunt Chair of Biblical Preaching on March 11, 1997, at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Hunt took over from Frank Page as president of the Southern Baptist Convention in June 2008. He held the post for a period of 2 years before he was succeeded by Bryant Wright

His church celebrated Hunt’s 40 years in ministry in November 2016, at the same time, they celebrated his 30 years serving as senior pastor at First Baptist Woodstock Church. Hunt and his wife Janet made an announcement to FBC-Woodstock in  August 2018, that he would be transitioning out of his full-time pastoral position as he was determined to fulfill a Senior VP ministry for the North American Mission Board.
